You were ready to greet the sun with a little running session before work but your feet had different plans. Instead of lacing up those shoes and going outside to enjoy the beautiful weather you are now stuck inside nursing a sore, achy foot. What might be going on? Our Stoughton and Madison, WI, podiatrist, Dr. Neal Katz, is here to shed some light on what could be causing you pain.

Plantar fasciitis

This is one of the most common causes of foot pain. More specifically, it is known to cause heel pain. The plantar fascia, which runs the length of the foot, can easily become inflamed from overuse. Our Madison foot doctor often sees this in athletes who suddenly amp up their athletic endeavors too quickly. Of course, anyone can be prone to this inflammatory foot problem.

How it’s treated: Plantar fasciitis will often go away on its own, as long as you take time away from those athletic activities that could make it worse. Until everything has healed, avoid high-impact exercises and stick to low-impact ones like riding the stationery bike or swimming. Ice, pain relievers and massage are other ways to facilitate faster healing while also reducing your symptoms.

Bunions

A bunion is a deformity of the foot that affects the large joint near the big toe. Most people notice that they have a bunion because it seems to protrude more than the same joint does on the other foot. It can even cause the big toe to lean in on the other toes. If you have a bunion, you may find that walking around in shoes can cause some aching, soreness and swelling of the joint.

How it’s treated: While the only cure is surgery, many people will not require surgery. In fact, symptoms can be controlled with simple lifestyle changes such as avoiding high heels, only wearing shoes that fit properly, wearing custom shoe inserts (orthotics), and splinting the foot at night.

Achilles tendonitis

The name sounds rather scary and intimidating but it simply means that the Achilles tendon, which is found at the back of the heel, is inflamed. Much like plantar fasciitis, this condition comes about from overuse. Those who wear high heels often, as well as those with certain types of arthritis may also be prone to developing this painful condition.

How it’s treated: The sooner you can seek treatment the better. Stay away from high heels or shoes that bunch up your toes. If you start to notice pain or discomfort, tackle the issue right away with ice and over-the-counter pain relievers.
